Powell River Sea Kayak: Tours of Desolation Sound

Sea Kayak Tours into Desolation Sound, British Columbia, Canada.

Gourmet Tour FoodLocated on Okeover Inlet - "just around the corner" from Desolation Sound Marine Park - Powell River Sea Kayak Ltd. specializes in this uniquely wonderful destination. Desolation Sound Marine Park is a world renowned boating and kayaking destination. Encompassing 8,449 hectares (14,000 acres of upland), it is British Columbia's largest marine park.

Why is Desolation Sound one of the most popular boating areas in Canada?

Let's start with the many sheltered bays, coves and pocket beaches - perfect for poking in and out of with a sea kayak. Add clusters of islands and islets and the paddling just gets more interesting. The marine life in the area is fabulous. Desolation SoundGiant Sunflower Stars, clusters of Purple Stars, Sea Cucumbers and Urchins (and certainly much, much more) inhabit the intertidal zone. Harbour Seal haul-out sites are located throughout Desolation Sound Marine Park. Porpoises, White-sided Dolphins and even the occasional Killer Whale all make their presence known each year.

Let's not leave out the spectacular views towards the towering peaks of the Coast Mountains or the fabulous sunsets towards Vancouver Island. The weather and water temperature are always important factors. Desolation Sound boasts the warmest ocean waters this side of Baja California. With water temperatures averaging 22° Celcius (that's 74° Fahrenheit!), Desolation Sound calls out for swimming. But why just swim when you can snorkel over the colourful marine gardens? To top it off, this region has some of the mildest weather on the entire coast of British Columbia (and has in fact the mildest temperates in Canada). Average summer temperatures vary from 20° - 30° C (70° - 90° F). The vegetation can be the ultimate proof of this mild climate. An abundance of Madrone trees and even types of cactus thrive in certain areas of this region! To Sea Kayak Canada at it's very best, look no further than Desolation Sound.

If it is so popular, does this mean it is overcrowded?

Not where we go!Eating dessert, watching a sunset

Most kayakers and boaters go into the known and popular anchorages. Powell River Sea Kayak tours into the lesser known areas. Even during the busier months of July and August, Powell River Sea Kayak Ltd. is able to lead clients into quiet, pristine areas. We tour off-the-beaten path to provide an exceptional experience at any time of the year. Keep in mind, busy is a relative word. This is still a large wilderness area that has no road access beyond our launch site!

How does Powell River Sea Kayak Ltd. avoid the overcrowding?

By not going where the masses go.

Desolation Sound Marine Park, along with the surrounding area, is truly massive. We tour not only in the marine park but outside the marine park as well. This allows us to avoid busy areas during the high season. Powell River Sea Kayak Ltd. has obtained several tenured sites throughout areas outside of the marine park. These sites are through the government of British Columbia. This allows us to legally use sites outside of the marine park - thus opening up many wonderful options to obtain a quiet, off-the-beaten path experience.

Snorkeler in Desolation SoundIn conclusion, we know this area extremely well! Powell River Sea Kayak's base is just 3 km from Desolation Sound Marine Park. This base is also the home of Adam and Laurie Vallance - the owners of Powell River Sea Kayak Ltd. Living and operating near Desolation Sound Marine Park has given Powell River Sea Kayak Ltd. a profound knowledge of Desolation Sound Marine Park and the surrounding area. 2004 was Powell River Sea Kayak's 10th year operating in Desolation Sound.

Hi Adam,
The trip was outstanding, the food was delicious, the company enjoyable. The weather for the most part was bearable which was mostly due to the tents keeping us and our gear dry. The paddle back on the 12th was grueling and nasty to say the least. Mother Nature decided to blast us full on with wind and rain but we prevailed and actually were laughing on many occasions.
I trust you know that Rhonda and Angus are keepers. I have been in the company of many different races, religions, guides, etc., over the past thirty years and can honestly say they deserve an A+++ rating. Their considerable attentiveness to client needs, constant and consistent work ethic, ever present safety awareness, flexibility in planning, and easy going attitudes all delivered with ever-ready smiles made the trip a stellar event. I can only say keep up the good work because all of the mentioned qualities are extremely rare in today's world.
Regards, Boyd   [Read More Testimonials...]
